More from France: La Vierge de Monton

Here's 19 more photos from my trip to France.

La Vierge de Monton sets atop the Puy de Monton in the commune of Veyre-Monton, Auvergne, France. The statue depicts the Virgin Mary holding a young Jesus, standing on top of a snake, and overlooking the valley. The statue was constructed in 1869, and there is an altar inside for believers to leave offerings and prayers.

Also in this set is a German artillery piece that is located near the foot of the statue. The cannon was captured during World War I, and was later buried underground to prevent provoking bombardment during World War II. The cannon was excavated and restored after that conflict ended.

Additionally there are some shots of the caves located below the top of the mountain. These caves were modified and occupied by humans from at least the Middle Ages until the early 20th Century.

All photos in this set were taken with a Nikon D5100 and a Nikkor 18-55mm zoom lens.

The set can be found on Flickr here or on Google+ photos here
